This truly amazing Fedoskino lacquer box has captured a characteristic scene of Russian life at the end of the eighteenth century. The main characters painted on this Fedoskino lacquer box are the brave Hussar, who has stopped to give some water to his horse, and two ladies, offering their help with the horse and treating the Hussar to some tea.
Creating this Fedoskino lacquer box, the artist managed to depict a generalized portrait of the ladies/men relationships in Russia in those times. The hussars, light cavalry regiments, were considered to be not only the most courageous, but also the most romantic soldiers of the army.
As presented on this Fedoskino lacquer box, the hussar is dressed in his traditional military uniform, consisting of tight white pants, short jacket know as dolman, with heavy horizontal gold braid on the breast. He is also wearing a red fur cloak, rippling down off his shoulders. The image of the hussar described on this Fedoskino lacquer box is very typical of those times, as he is talking to women with a lofty air and his posture attests to his pride and even some haughtiness in treating people around him.
The women on the other hand demonstrate their readiness to render any service to the man who is serving in the army, protecting them from the enemies. The artist added some distinct details to this Fedoskino lacquer box that make it look like a truly authentic Russian masterpiece. The shoulder yoke, dropped by the women who were in a hurry to give water to the horse, the traditional Russian samovar – a symbol of hospitality, and a lady holding out a cup of tea to the traveler, all of those can be found and seen only in Russia, and the artist who painted this Fedoskino lacquer box knows Russian history, culture and traditions perfectly.
The bright color palette is only enhanced by the use of mother-of-pearls that made the coral pink, emerald green and slate grey of the women’s garments shine with some transparent luster. While the box, hinged on side, is lacquered with black varnish from the outside, its interior is wine-red.
