The pacifying scene featured on this Fedoskino lacquer box portrays a man and a woman coming back from the hayfield. The theme is a traditional one as it reflects the annual pastoral occupations – and hay harvesting, depicted on this Fedoskino lacquer box, is one of the most important parts of village life.
The color palette is dominated by the warm hues of yellow – the color of late summer and early fall, when haymaking is at its height. The man and woman painted in the foreground of this Fedoskino lacquer box look somewhat tired after the long working day in the fields. Their postures suggest that they walk at an easy pace, while their faces, drawn by the artist in tiny detail, express an innate contentment with the completed work.
This Fedoskino lacquer box virtually breathes with warmth: through the warm shades of ground colors – the rye of the fields changing softly into the goldenrod of the footpath which disappears furtively beyond the horizon.
The man and woman, featured on this Fedoskino lacquer box, are probably the husband and wife. They wear the traditional village costumes: the woman is dressed in the aureoline yellow chemise, brown skirt and white apron, a symbol of a good wife and a homemaker. Her husband is pictured carrying a scythe, with his left arm on his wife’s shoulder, expressing tenderness and affection of a married couple. The artist managed to impart the atmosphere of busy rural workdays combined with the romance of the county life through the scene on this Fedoskino lacquer box.
An exquisite floral ornament rims the edges of the Fedoskino lacquer box, with black lacquer finish of the outside of the box, and the vibrant red varnish – to cover the inside of this antique lacquer box.
A one-of-a-kind piece in the collection of Russian Treasure, this Fedoskino lacquer box will make a perfect St. Valentine’s or Birthday gift for your most special person.
