This enchanting piece of museum quality - authentic Palekh Lacquer Box, showing a recognizable scene from outstanding Pushkin Fairytale of Tsar Saltan was composed and carefully hand-painted by famous Russian Palekh artist and personally selected from the artists that we have worked with for many years.

Pushkin's fairy tales have always been a favourite subject for the painting school of Palekh, a famous Russian old centre of icon-painting and lacquer miniature. The fantastically beautiful Lacquer Boxes by the Palekh artists charm the viewer as a precious amalgam of shining vibrant colours on a mystique deep black background, lit up by the sparkles of lacework golden ornament.

The main difference of Palekh Lacquer Box from Fedoskino, Mstera, Kholui Lacquer Boxes is the use of hand-made egg tempera (a mixture of egg yolk, water and a few drops of vinegar). Tempera painting primes the surface of the box with many thin color layers. Consequently, they come to look like the images in water-color painting. Finally, the Lacquer Box tempera layers also acquire an exceptional hardness.

The Lacquer Box artist has caught a moment of Princess Swan transformation into a beautiful maiden before amazed Gvidon. To the left of Gvidon the craftsman has painted the third character – Gvidon’s mother, also astonished with a wonderful transfiguration of Princess Swan.

The composition is skilfully painted in the traditional Palekh style - bright and colorful. The scene is drawn in bright tempera paints against the black background. The costumes of Gvidon and his mother, the surrounding landscape are richly detailed with gorgeous gold and silver paints. The edges of the lid, as well as the box sides, are decorated with a graceful gold ornaments composed of elegant scrolls and tiny beads. The Lacquer Box rests on the flat bottom, its exterior is covered with black lacquer, and its interior – with red one. The Lacquer Box is hand-polished several times in order to have a mirror-like luster.

This Palekh Lacquer Box will be a true treasure in your Russian art collection.
