 This set of Russian Matryoshka Nesting Dolls features a famous Russian fairytale “Snegurochka” (“The Snow Maiden”). The plot of the story is masterfully and thoroughly conveyed on these five Russian Matryoshka Nesting Dolls by virtuosic artist. The Russian Matryoshka Nesting Dolls were hand-painted with water colors and finished with lacquer coat.

Nominally, each Russian Matryoshka Nesting Doll can be divided into two parts: the first, repetitive one features the Snow Maiden as such, and the second part tells us a fabulous story of hers.

It is no mere a chance that the artist paid such a great attention to the image of Snegurochka, since she was believed to be of unearthly beauty. The craftsman did his best to reconstruct her character according to legend – a young delicate girl with long fair hair in two tresses, large naive turquoise eyes, and downy lashes. Snegurochka, depicted on Russian Matryoshka Nesting Dolls is dressed according to the legend - airy sarafan, decorated with snow-white lace, sky-blue with neckpiece and sleeve furring, and magnificent weightless apron flowered with roses.

Three characters are drawn on the very first Russian Matryoshka Nesting Doll – beautiful lady Spring and handsome Frost with their daughter Snegurochka. The artist masterfully depicted feelings and emotions of them – you can notice a touch of sadness mixed with love on their faces. The scene depicted is a moment of their parting.

The second Russian Matryoshka Nesting Doll depicts the scene on Red Hill, where Snegurochka is adopted by Bobyl-Bakula and his wife.

On the third Russian Matryoshka Nesting Doll you can see Snegurochka and a shepherd named Lel, whom she grows to like. He’s playing for her on his pipe, but she’s unable to love him, her heart is cold. You can notice how artfully the artist painted Russian nature on this Russian Matryoshka Nesting Doll, by closer look you can see separate grass-blades and leaves.

On the fourth Russian Matryoshka Nesting Doll there’s Snegurochka begging her mother to give her an ability to love. Her face and gestures express a feeling of hope.

The last, fifth Russian Matryoshka Nesting Doll features the payoff of the story. But, unfortunately, it’s not a happy-end. After getting the ability to love, Snegurochka falls in love with Mizgir', but as soon as she does it, her heart warms up and she melts.

This version of the story was made into a play by Alexander Ostrovsky, with incidental music by Tchaikovsky. The tale “Snegurochka” was also adapted into an world-popular opera by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov known as The Snow Maiden.
